How to get free upgrade from Windows 7/8 to Windows 10 July 2018

Officially Microsoft says it has ended free upgrade from Windows 7/8 to Windows 10 but they have't closed the upgrade completely. You can still get a genuine copy of Windows 10 if you have a genuine copy of Windows 7/8 installed on your system. Keep reading this article to get your own copy

Note: Once you completely upgrade to Windows 10 you can't go back to your windows 7/8, you will need another copy of licensed Windows 7/8.

Their are two ways to upgrade to a Windows copy

1. From Live USB

Installation from live usb is quick but their is no option to protect your data on the drive where windows is installed. If you have an assembled PC please proceed with the second option as there is a small chance you will have activation issues, others can continue with anyone of them.

2. From Windows 7/8 iteself

Installation from Windows 7/8 directly is very slow but it can save your apps, files and other data on the drive where Windows is installed.

Read method two

Please Note: This is not an Windows installation guide, this guide will help you uograde your older windows to 10. If you ran into a problem while installing or configuration please search it on the internet.

Method 1

Before proceeding we need to know our WIndows 7/8 key for backup purpose, if you already have your key written somewhere then it's great otherwise you can download and install NirSoft Product Key. Once installed run the program and look for your operating system name if it's their then write it's product key.

To upgrade to Windows 10 we will need an ISO image.

First go to this link : Microsoft Windows 10

Then right click on the web page and select inspect element and toggle to mobile view and select iPad Pro in the device menu like this

Then choose the available option and down the ISO file.
Once downloaded we will need an at least 8gb pendrive and rufus.
Then open rufus select your usb and select the iso file.
Make sure your "Partition scheme is MBR" and "Target system is BIOS or UEFI" then click start.

Once it's 100% completed reboot your system and boot from live usb.
Now you will have to install the Windows 10 the usual way.
When the setup asks for key just click "I'll do it later" and when the installation is complete use your previous windows key to activate from the settings.

Please note: The copy of Windows 10 you download must correspond with the edition of Windows you are licensed for:

  • Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Windows 8.0 Core, Windows 8.1 Core must use a Windows 10 Home ISO
  • Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 8.0 Pro, Windows 8.1 Pro must use a Windows 10 Pro ISO
  • If you are using Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8.0 Enterprise, Windows 8.1 Enterprise editions you won't be able to use the free upgrade offer.
If you're facing any problem with activation, please read this guide. Activate Windows 10 using your Windows 7 or Windows 8 product key

Method 2

Before proceeding we need to know our WIndows 7/8 key for backup purpose, if you already have your key written somewhere then it's great otherwise you can download and install NirSoft Product Key. Once installed run the program and look for your operating system name if it's their then write it's product key.

To install Windows 10 we will need Windows 10 Installation Media

Download and run the tool when you're ready to upgrade.

You’ll first be prompted to upgrade the PC now, or create installation media for another PC. Select “Upgrade this PC now” to begin the upgrade process, and click the “Next” button. The tool begins downloading the Windows 10 installation files. The time that takes just depends on your Internet connection speed. The actual file size to download is around 4.5 GB so it will take some time.

Then you will be promoted to "License Terms" click "Agree" to proceed, then you it will show you the install page. By default it's "Keep personal files and apps" but you can change it by clicking "Change what to keep"

If you clicked the “Change what to keep” link, you’ll see a screen that lets you make a choice about what you want to keep during the update. Your choices include:

  • Keep personal files and apps: This option retains all your personal files, all installed applications, and your current Windows settings. Choosing this option is the same as if you’d skipped the screen altogether.
  • Keep personal files only: This option retains all your personal files, but removes any installed applications and current Windows settings. You’ll need to reinstall the applications you want after Windows is done updating.
  • Nothing: This option removes all your personal files, all installed applications, and your Windows settings. It’s the closest you can get to performing a clean install using the update procedure and, honestly, you might be better off just doing a clean install if you’re thinking of using this setting. The update tool does move your personal files a folder named windows.old, so you can recover them for a while after the update. Still, you should make sure any important files are backed up, anyway. You can find more info online at Microsoft Support
.

Select "Next" to proceed installation. During the update, your PC will reboot a few times as the installer works. When it’s done, you’ll have the chance to do a little configuration. Once installed properly you will see configure windows 10 after the upgrade.
